A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

It’s Official!!! Woodlands Presbyterian Church Becomes a Congregation

At a March 17, 1996 service at the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines, the Woodlands Presbyterian Church was officially recognized as a Congregation of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Dr. William A. Rail, Chair of the Church Development Committee of the Presbytery of Arkansas, recognized the 70 charter members of the church and conducted its first congregational meeting.

Anne Johnson reported on the actions of the Elder Nominating Committee. Nine Elders were elected. Ethelee Beverly, Llewellyn Smith, James Wilkes and Ann Workman were ordained and installed. Diane Perrin will be ordained and installed at another time. The previously ordained Elders who were installed were Spencer Johnson, Jane Pehle and Dick Warner. Barbara Booth will be installed at a later date.

The congregation voted unanimously to call Dr. James J. Farley as its first pastor. Dr. Farley was installed and the Charge to the Pastor was given by the Reverend Ernest B. Smith, Pastor Emeritus of the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines. Elder Robert W. Burgreen, Chair of the Mission Committee at the Kirk, gave the Charge to the new Congregation.

Reverend Howard Gordon from the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock gave the message for the four o’clock service. His theme was the Woodlands group was not new but another part of the long Presbyterian tradition.

Blessings,
