OCTOBER 2009, is the next Alpha Course.

ALPHA IS HERE!

We invite you attend the next Alpha Course which will be given next fall. Watch this page for a specific date.

What is Alpha? It is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed, non-threatening setting over ten weekly sessions. It is low keyed in a friendly fun filled atmosphere. It is non-denominational emphasizing Christian principles and faith.

Alpha is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is about people, not about a program.

Who attends Alpha?
People attend it for a variety of reasons. People who attend Alpha run the gamut from wanting to learn about Christianity; to asking specific questions they want answered, moving to a higher deeper level of their relationship with God.

What are the bare essentials of Alpha?
Alpha meets once a week on Wednesday for ten (10) weeks starting September 3rd. Each meeting lasts about 2-1/2 hours but the first hour is a dinner meal. The entire group sits down for an evening meal. There is a general meeting beginning with songs and a DVD presentation by Nicky Gumbel, the director of Alpha, giving a talk on issues relating to the Christian faith. The talks are not only interesting but a provocative. Examples of talks are “Why did Jesus die?” “How does God guide us?” What does the Holy Spirit do?” “Does God heal today?” “What about the Church?”

Following the talk the group divides into small groups for the most important aspect of Alpha. He small group is the core of Alpha. The sessions offer an opportunity to make friends and bond as a group in a relaxed and non-threatening environment. Each group has a trained leader and helper to facilitate the group in their discussions.

What is the cost?
The program is free. However, there is a request for a donation of four dollars for each meal. The donation is voluntary and not a requirement.

Alpha!
This is an opportunity for you to explore the meaning of life. The program started in England over thirty (30) years ago. Since that time, it has spread around the world. More than ten (10) million people have completed the Alpha course in churches, homes, universities, prisons and remote villages in third world countries.

Please come and join us for the next Alpha Course.

SLIDELL, LOUISIANA MISSION TRIP, April 2008

Mission Trip, April '08
Group of Slidell workers
Quilts for Charity

When I retired friends said it would take a while for me to adjust but retirement would soon feel like being on vacation all the time. (“Vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in.” -Robert Orben). So when Karen said we could go BACK TO WORK for two weeks for the Presbytery relief group in Slidell, LA helping rebuild Katrina damaged homes, we signed up and joined Tony and Barbara Booth, Sherm Clark, Joe and Nancy Fouts, Noranne Glezen, Mary Jo Kurten, Katie O’Neal, Joe and Loretta McIntire, Gloria Mitchell and Woody and Ann Workman and headed south.

For two weeks we worked hard, worshipped faithfully and celebrated often. We all gained more then we gave. We found ourselves dead tired by the end of each day but supremely satisfied for we accomplished tasks we had never before done, BUT WE DID IT.

We may never know how our work will affect others but each of us knows the joy which we received from doing work for those in need. So if you think you have been on vacation (retirement) too long come and join us on the next mission trip, which is to be the week of October 26, 2008. Be sure and mark it on your calendars and plan to join us.

Quilts for Charity Workshop

is a gathering of community women who enjoy working on quilts for the crisis centers in the area. We have contributed to children’s homes, crisis centers, food pantries, CASA of Benton, youth ranch and substance abuse centers for all ages. We have contributed approximately 196 quilts over almost six years.

Our quilters wash and cut the donated fabric into 7” squares and then design the quilts tops, sew them and tie the layers. We then bind the quilts and attach the labels.

We meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at Woodlands Presbyterian Church, which is located just behind the Woodlands Auditorium, at 11 Ecuestre Drive, Hot Springs Village.

We especially invite anyone interested to join our group – please bring a pair of scissors and remember the only qualification is a thimble!

For additional information call Phyllis Spencer at 922-0666.
